Executive Board Meeting of the European Left in Berlin, Commemoration of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht
This weekend, the European Left held its first Executive Board meeting of 2009 in Berlin. In view of the recent developments, the meeting focused on the dramatic situation in Gaza and a peaceful solution of the conflict. The European Left strongly condemns the Israeli invasion and calls for an immediate ceasefire and total withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. The EL calls for a mass mobilisation of its member parties in order to support the peace movement for a consequent end of all military activities from both sides.

Other topics of the agenda included the current gas supply crisis in Central and Eastern Europe, and an analysis of the ongoing protests in Greece, which will be further debated on a conference next Saturday in Athens. With regard to the consequences of the financial and economic crisis, the EL will organise a special meeting of economic experts on February 6th, in Lisbon.
In the run-up to the European elections in June 2009, the EL has scheduled further activities as part of the electoral campaign. These will include a mass mobilisation on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of NATO, and a debate on the European education system and the Bologna process.
As every year, the European Left participated in the Sunday commemoration of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht at the cemetery of Berlin-Friedrichsfelde.
