Bolivia enacts new Consitution
The new Bolivian Constitution, which had been adopted by a large majority of Bolivian citizens, was promulgated on 7 February 2009.

This event marks another important step of a long-lasting struggle in favour of a public control over natural resources, the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples, social justice, and a new democracy for all.
The limitations on the size of agricultural property suggested by the Bolivian government were also adopted, which shows that the Bolivian people support an agricultural reform that benefits the poor.
At the World Social Forum in Belém (Brazil) the Bolivian president Evo Morales called the new Constitution a protecting shield, which conscious people had mounted to avoid the return of liberalism and of the reactionary policies that continue to be promoted by today’s ruling classes.
The Constitution clears the way for a refoundation of a State dominated until recently by a racist and xenophobic oligarchy, who has neither abandoned its plans to overthrow the democratic government, nor its will to separate the country.
The Party of the European Left expresses its solidarity with the Bolivian people, and reaffirms its determination to join the progressive forces of Bolivia in their future struggles for a new international order of justice and cooperation.
In the same way, the EL adheres to the positions of the members of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), who have supported the democratic government of Bolivia and rejected all attempts of a coup d’état or separation of the country.
